Majolica: Italian Dinnerware Artistry

When buying and collecting Italian dinnerware, shoppers who want authentic Italian dishes should seek out “made in Italy”, “made in Deruta” or “majolica ware”, 100% imported from Italy, hand-painted dinnerware.

Majolica, a unique type of twice-fired earthenware found in Italian pottery, is one of Italian pottery’s most distinguishing designs. Majolica ware, originating in the 14th century, goes through a five-step process to produce 100% authentic Italian ceramics. First, a plain lump of clay is formed on a pottery wheel, or pressed into specific mold and set aside to dry naturally, resulting in “green ware”, a delicate grayish piece ready to be fired in a kiln. The first firing results in a lightly colored pottery in the traditional “terracotta” color of Italian earthenware.

The Italian dish is then dipped in a glaze which will later produce the pottery’s overall color, quality and luster, so this third step is critical in the craftsmanship! Different Italian artisans are identified by their use of these glazes, resulting in a true collector’s piece. Fourth, the artisans hand-craft an individual design, spending hours of care on each intricate piece. This step is the true essence of Majolica Italian earthenware. Finally, the pottery is carefully baked again, paying careful attention to proper firing temperatures and allowing the Italian earthenware to naturally cool. This last step is just as fragile and artistic as the others because any error could result in damage to the pottery’s design or crack its delicate surface.

When buyers or collectors of fine Italian dishes become knowledgeable about the traditional Italian craft of pottery-making, they can better appreciate their collection, better identify high-quality Italian dishes for purchasing and be proud to display their individual dishes!
